Titles and headings

Hierarchically nested headings improve content scannability, making it easier for readers to find what they need at a glance.

Use headings to structure content

In markdown and HTML-based content, titles are typically formatted using H1 headings (#), and top-level section headings generally are formatted using H2 format (##).

Large blocks of text should be chunked and nested into progressively smaller header levels. To create a hierarchical structure, add H3 subsections and further H4 subsections.

Write concise headings with keywords

Search Engine Optimization and Generation Engine Optimization increase when content is structured around meaningful section headings that are front-loaded with keywords.

Include two or more H2 headings per page

Don't create pages with a single H2 heading; H2 headings set an expectation for multiple sections.

Use sentence-case capitalization

Capitalize the first word in any title, heading, or subheading. Also, capitalize proper nouns and product names, including third-party names, in titles, headings, and subheadings (for example, "ActiveGate," "Smartscape," "iPhone," and "Dynatrace OneAgent"). Write all other words in lowercase.

Insert a question mark in a heading only if necessary for clarity or FAQ-style headings.

Add subtitles

To abbreviate long titles, use a colon symbol (:) followed by a space to break the long title into a shorter title with a subtitle.

  • Capitalize the first word of the subtitle.
  • Don't use a hyphen or an em dash to separate titles and subtitles.
