Industry word list

This page offers terminology guidelines for Dynatrace content developers. While these terms aren't specific to Dynatrace, they appear frequently in Dynatrace content. This is neither a dictionary or a glossary but rather a guide to correct usage.

For general writing guidelines and guidance on words that aren't included in this list, see the Microsoft Style Guide. For questions that aren't addressed by Microsoft Style, see The American Heritage Dictionary or the Chicago Manual of Style.

affect, effect

Most commonly, "affect" is a verb and means to influence or cause change. "Effect" is a noun and is the result of a change.

Use "after" in place of "once."

An alert is a signal condition within a scope that requires timely action from a notified user or an automation.

  • As a general guideline, use "app" when referring to a mobile app or a small application that runs on a platform.
  • Use "app" to refer to Dynatrace Apps or third-party apps developed for the latest Dynatrace. Avoid adding the word "app" following the mention of an app name. Wherever possible, only use the app name.
  • Use "application" when referring to web, mobile, or custom applications monitored by Dynatrace Real User Monitoring.

Use "can" to express ability and use "might" (not "may") to express possibility. Use "may" only if you are speaking of providing permission.

can't, don't, won't

In general, use contractions whenever possible because they mimic conversational speech. Negative contractions (for example, "can't" and "isn't") are acceptable but, sometimes, can reduce comprehension by some international audiences. For imperative statements or caveats in documentation, use the full form instead of a negative contraction, for example, "do not" in place of "don't." Don't use uncommon or easily misunderstood contractions.

Configuration is the process of arranging or connecting software components for a specific use in a specific environment, including the adjustment of available settings for installed software. Configuration is typically a part of the software installation process. When settings are changed following release of software into production, use adjust in place of configure.

When comparing quantities:

  • Use "less" to refer to an amount, value, or degree.
  • In most cases, use "less" in reference to time, even though we can count time.
  • Use "fewer" to refer to a countable number of items.
  • Don't use "under" to refer to a quantity or number.

In most cases, mention the control label and avoid talking about UI elements such as "list" or "dropdown list."

Avoid this word wherever possible.

Avoid using "native" to refer to people. When referring to software products, try to use a more precise term (for example, use "built-in" to describe a feature that's part of a product).

The term "native" also isn't necessarily clear (for example, "cloud-native" could mean that something was written for the cloud, is built into a cloud platform, or that currently exists in a cloud platform).

In nearly all cases, use "need to" in place of "must" or "have to." "Need to" indicates that something is required. "Must" indicates a strong, non-negotiable obligation. "Have to" indicates a non-negotiable externally-imposed obligation.

A notification is a message sent to a Dynatrace user through a defined notification channel such as email, Dynatrace UI, Dynatrace mobile app, or third-party messaging system like Slack. Notifications typically don't require a timely response.

Include "that" at the beginning of a clause that’s necessary for the sentence to make sense. Use "which" at the beginning of any clause that adds supporting or parenthetical information and place a comma before it.

Use "that is" (rather than "i.e.") to denote "in other words." The phrase should be followed by a comma. Omit the phrase if the context is clear.

Use "their," "them," and "they" instead of "he," "she," "his," or "her."

  • Don't use as a verb. Use "switch" instead.
  • Only use "toggle" when it's necessary to refer to a toggle-type UI control that doesn't have a clear label. In most cases, avoid using if the label alone is sufficient.
  • Use "turn on" and "turn off" as a verb with toggle controls.

  • Don't use to refer to selecting or clearing checkboxes in instructions. Use "select" and "clear" for checkboxes instead.
